The Metaverse… Is the human being ready?

What is the Metaverse and how does it work? The metaverse is based on virtual reality and will shape our future in work, entertainment and even sexual relationships.

Can you imagine living in a world that looks like a video game? There, human beings would be avatars; the environment, three-dimensional spaces created by computer, and we could do everything we do in the real world (interact with other ‘digital’ people, go to the movies, shopping or travel to other countries), but without leaving home.

This virtual universe will be accessible through devices such as virtual reality or augmented reality glasses and smartphone applications.

Users will meet and communicate through digital avatars, explore new areas and create content.

It sounds like science fiction, but this is the Metaverse, a virtual reality world in which Facebook, now called Meta (from Metaverse), and other large companies, such as Google, Apple or Microsoft, are investing millions of dollars. It is, as they call it, the internet of the future.

What do you think? Would you like to?

Before answering this question, let’s simply do an exercise of reflection about

The use of the Internet and social networks is now an undeniable reality in our lives and we know some of the consequences that their use is having on us as individuals and on society.

The emergence of the Internet has not only revolutionized the world professionally, technologically or in terms of lifestyle, but has also brought about a profound social change.

A change in us in our behavior, in our way of thinking, in our way of feeling and in our brain.

Stress, impatience, frustration, low self-esteem and even depression are some of the effects that the use of the Internet and technology are having on society, especially on young people.

What would then be the effects and consequences of the Metaverse?

  • Here and now: Living in a parallel virtual world, we would totally lose the sense of the passage of time and space; the human being is focused on the here and now, however, life in the Metaverse would totally disconnect us from the present.
  • The loss of the senses: Smelling, touching, looking, feeling are basic human sensations for life that keep us connected to the world in which we live. By eliminating these sensations, we will be totally disconnected from reality. We will no longer interact with other people, since these are artificial characters that interact through artificial intelligence.
  • Identify with the character: We all form a mental character of ourselves throughout our lives, we form a personality. With the use of social networks, it is no longer just a mental concept, as we see ourselves in photographs and videos through filters that alter reality.

This makes us like our retouched image more than our natural image, even causing us to reject ourselves as we are.

Can you imagine a world in which this character was totally fictitious, a character, a custom-made alter ego that has nothing to do with reality? If we get used to seeing ourselves like this, who wants to go back to the sad real character? The rejection of the real and natural image of ourselves is inevitable. Especially if we are talking about young people and teenagers.

If the life I have invented in the Metaverse is fun, easy, and immediate, in a world where I have everything and can be whatever I want to be, why go back to real life? If this is the case, real life, which is what we have, could become a place where I don’t want to be or know how to be.

  • Social skills: What would happen if we spent a large part of the day relating to each other by being someone we are not? We stop learning to relate to real people from the real image of ourselves, creating dependency to relate only through the metaverse.

Low self-esteem if I don’t like my life, nor don’t like myself because I prefer the sweetened fictitious version. The idea I have of myself will be very negative, so my self-esteem will be very low.

  • Impatience. Yes, he spent hours of the day in a world where you don’t have to wait for anything. If everything is immediate, if everything happens instantly, what will happen when I return to real life, where things take time? Discomfort and frustration are guaranteed.

If we are not aware of all these consequences, they will only increase the discomfort, frustration and stress of society.

This is not about demonizing anyone or anything. Only to be aware of the consequences of our actions. Besides, of course, the Metaverse has an obviously lucrative purpose and is not intended for your mental health, but for your consumption.

Don’t believe anything you just read, experiment and think for yourself.
