We are a speck of dust – Carl Sagan
We are a speck of dust in the darkness of the cosmos
We are a speck of dust according to Carl Sagan. The land, the place where we all live.
In it all those we love, all those we know, all those we have heard about. All human beings who have ever existed have lived their lives there. The sum of our happiness and suffering, thousands of trusted religions, ideologies and economic doctrines, every hunter and gatherer, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father and every hopeful child.
Every inventor and explorer, every teacher of values, every corrupt politician, every superstar, or supreme leader, every saint and every sinner in the history of our species has lived there. In a speck of dust suspended on a ray of sunlight.
The earth is a very small stage in a huge cosmic noise, this is the reflection that Carl Sagan invites us to make.
In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager I probe into space, with the mission to locate and study the limits of the solar system.
After 13 years of travel, Carl Sagan oriented it towards Earth to take a last look at it.
After seeing the image, he realized that the earth is a tiny speck of dust in the cosmic darkness.
All of this gives us a perspective about ourselves and our ego. We are part of an infinite universe, yet we believe we are the protagonists. Self-knowledge allows us to have a perspective on life and our environment. The awakening of consciousness gives us that conscious look at the world, as an alternative to the arrogant look of the human being.
On the other hand, Carl Sagan invites us to reflect on the fact that there is no other silver like ours, nor any other to which we can move, we only have this one and yet we do not take care of it.
